Reading (the second term)

My name is Tom Austin. I live in a small town of Durham in the north of England.

This story is about the day when I went to London with my dad for my 12th birthday. I woke up at five o’clock in the morning. When I got downstairs and said goodbye to my mum, Dad and I got into the car and drove to the train station.

On the train, we were talking about what sights we wanted to see. When we arrived at St Pancras Station, we went in search of something to eat. We found a subway café and had lunch there. Then we set off walking around London. Some of the sights we saw were Nelson’s Column, Big Ben, the Tower of London and Westminster Abbey. But the main attraction of the day was a flight on the London Eye. I was really looking forward to this and it didn’t disappoint me. At last, we got on the train home. On our way back, my dad and I were discussing what we had seen and done during the day. We both decided that we had really enjoyed our day.

 The History of the London Police

Today there are policemen everywhere but in 1700 London had no policemen at all. A few old men used to protect the city streets at night and they were not paid very much.

About three hundred years ago London was starting to get bigger. The city was very dirty and many people were poor. There were so many thieves who stole money in the streets that people stayed in their homes so much as possible.

In 1750 Henry Fielding started to pay a group of people to stop thieves. They were like policemen and were called ‘Bow Street Runners’ because they were working near Bow street.

Fifty years later there were 120 Bow Runners but London had become very big and needed more policemen. So, in 1829 the first metropolitan (or London) Police Force was started with 3000 officers.

Most of them were working on foot but a few rode horses. Until 1920 all the police in London were men. Today London police are quite well paid and for the few police officers who still ride horses the pay is even better than for the others.

We  live very near Portobello Market . My mum and I walk to the market every week. My aunt Vicki lives near Portobello Market, too . She meets us at  the market. First we go to the clothes stalls. Our favourite stall sells great jeans and T-shirts. Then we go to the fruit and vegetable stalls. My mum buys fresh fruit and vegetables every Saturday.

At twelve o'clock we go to the hot dog stall. We buy hot dogs with German sausages. There is a juggler near this stall every week. He does new tricks every Saturday! The tourists watch him and take photos. We watch him too and we eat our hot dogs. Then we carry our bags and we go home.

Meine Einkäufe

Jeden Morgen gehe ich einkaufen. Ich helfe meiner Mutter und kaufe täglich Lebensmittel ein. Nicht weit von unserem Haus ist ein großes Lebensmittelgeschäft. Hier kann man alles kaufen: Fleisch, Fisch, Wurst, Würstchen, Schinken, Käse, Milch, Butter, Eier, Brot. In unserem Lebensmittelabteilung gibt es auch eine Abteilung, wo Süßigkeiten verkauft werden: Torten, Kuchen, Pralinen, Bonbons und Schokolade.

Ich gehe jeden Tag ins Lebensmittelgeschäft, weil wir frisches Brot und frische Milch brauchen.

Ins Warenhaus gehe ich selten. Heute besuche ich eines der größten Warenhäuser, weil ich ein Geschenk für meine Schwester brauche. Ich wollte für sie etwas Schönes wählen. Im Warenhaus gibt es immer eine große Auswahl. Es macht mir viel Vergnügen, von einer Abteilung in die andere zu gehen und mir die verschiedenen Waren auf den Verkaufstischen anzusehen. Da sind Abteilungen für Schuhe, Stoffe, Hüte, Elektro-und Radiowaren, Sport – und Schreibwaren, Bücher. Ich ging von einer Abteilung in die andere, immer auf und ab, mit dem Fahrstuhl oder Rolltreppe. Als ich durch die Buchabteilung ging, traf ich eine Freundin, die ich seit Monaten nicht gesehen hatte. Wir gingen in die Kurzwarenabteilung, weil sie eine neue Tasche kaufen wollte. Was es hier nicht alles gab! Man konnte hier schöne Handschuhe, Handtaschen, Taschentücher, Geldtaschen und anderes mehr finden. Ich stand vor einem Laadentisch und beschloß meiner Schwester eine schöne Handtasche zu kaufen. Ich sah eine elegante schwarze Handtasche, die mir sehr gefiel. Ich fragte die Verkäuferin, was sie kostete. Die Tasche war nicht teuer und ich kaufe sie. Dann gingen wir an der Bekleidungabteilung vorbei. Hier gibt es immer viele Käufer. Man kauft hier Mäntel, Anzüge, Jacken, Kleider, Hemden, Hosen, Blusen.

Aber heute gingen wir nicht in die anderen Abteilungen, weil wir uns beide sehr beeilen. Ich mußte noch meiner Mutter beim Mittagessen helfen.
